William Hill is a minor character in The Haunting of Hill House and one of the ghosts that haunts the grounds of Hill House following his suicide in 1948.

Biography[]

History[]

Little is known about his early history. His father Jacob Hill had commissioned the house to be built, and William’s mother died on the grounds before the house was finished. Jacob sent William to a mental institution as he was “clinically insane” and there William met the love of his life, Poppy Hill. William and Poppy married not long after in an asylum and moved to Hill House.

William and Poppy had two children, a girl, and a boy who lost the use of his legs and used a wheelchair. He had a niece named Jacqueline, and his sister Hazel did not get along with his wife Poppy.

In 1948, William walled himself inside the wall of the basement of Hill House[2]. It is assumed that he changed his mind moments later and tried to escape, scratching at the brick wall with no success. His disappearance remained a mystery until his skeleton is found when Hugh Crain is doing renovations on the Hill House property.

As a ghost, he first appears when he is looking for his bowler hat that Luke Crain had found. He haunts Luke as an adult in which he wears his signature hat while standing with his back to Luke.

Quotes[]

"William Hill, been missing since '48. Case went cold with the department." ― Detective[source]

"Fear and guilt are sisters. I knew a man once who knew those sisters well. They kissed his eyelids as he slept, and every morning he went just a little more mad. He built a wall to keep it all outside, but those two sisters, they were in there with him. Even there. That silly man thought his wall would keep them out, but there was just enough room for him... And them. So he was trapped behind that wall. Afraid and guilty. And his voice left him and he scratched and whimpered, and his fingers were shredded on his own bricks until his scratches just sounded like... rats in a wall. He felt small. So small. But that was his dream. And when he woke up, he was tall. So tall. For always. " Trish Park[source]

Trivia[]

  • His ghost appears unnaturally tall, with long limbs, using a cane and wearing his bowler hat. He is briefly shown in a picture on a mantle when Mrs. Dudley is talking about the Hill family with Eleanor Crain.
