The Way It Came is the fourth episode of The Haunting Of Bly Manor.

Synopsis[]

Racked with guilt, Dani is haunted by her own heartbreaking loss. Flora and Miles find ways to cope, and Bly's staff remember the dead over a bonfire.

Plot[]

A flashback to Dani’s childhood shows a conversation between her and Edmund, her deceased husband, in which they talk about the golden glasses she is often seen with. Dani quickly explains that she has a problematic relationship with her mother, which is why she is often seen with Edmund frequently. Further flash forwards in time show the evolution of their relationship which eventually ends in their engagement party.

As the funeral preparations begin at Bly Manor for Owen’s mother, it is quickly decided by Jamie and Dani that Dani should remain at Bly Manor that day and rest. She reluctantly agrees, but is caught off guard once more by the figure with the bright eyes she has been seeing throughout Bly Manor. Dani is not alone at Bly Manor, however, and bumps into a lonely Flora who is grave rubbing before the season ends. The two talk about the dead on Bly Manor and how they’re either too “close”, or too far away — Flora draws this back to a story about her own parents.

In the church, it is revealed that Hannah didn’t attend the funeral either. Flora has left artwork in there and upon picking it up, Dani notices a stone inscribed with “Viola Lloyd” on the floor but thinks nothing of it.

As the funeral procession returns, Jamie finally realises the truth in Hannah’s earlier words about Owen being glad about the death of his mother. Hannah explains that Owen’s mother suffered from dementia and thus was a shell of what she had previously been; Owen can finally live for the future. The situation at dinner becomes awkward when Flora makes it public knowledge that Hannah has romantic feelings for Owen. Tensions arise when Miles asks for a glass of wine, but Dani refuses, causing quite the issue when Miles becomes furious and remarks that Peter used to allow him the wine. With Miles’ outburst, Dani sends the both of them to bed furiously.

In the bedroom, Dani is disturbed by the sight of Flora’s dollhouse opening on its own. She picks up one of the dolls which resembles Peter, but is met with a request from Flora not to mess with the dolls. Realising whom the doll represents, Dani asks if Flora has seen Peter on the grounds or let him in, but she denies it, remarking that “it isn’t how it works”; Dani is confused but asks no more of the matter.

A flashback to the night of Edmund’s death shows an argument between the two when Dani remarks that she isn’t sure the two should marry, and remarks that she should’ve said no the night he asks. In a mood, Edmund exits the car and is hit by a truck. Moments before, however, Dani witnesses as the headlights of the truck reflect on Edmund’s glasses, and it becomes clear that the figure Dani keeps seeing is the last sight of Edmund and his glowing glasses.
