"The Bent-Neck Lady" is the fifth episode of The Haunting of Hill House.

Synopsis

A dark specter with an unsettling silhouette has haunted Nell since she was a girl. Now "the Bent-Neck Lady" is back -- and she's calling Nell home.

Plot

After leaving the house, they go to a hotel. Hugh Crain leaves to get Olivia Crain.

He returns in the morning, covered in blood. He says that their mother is okay now, and that their Aunt Janet will be there later to pick them up. He gives Eleanor Crain a pocket watch and says she'll be there at two. He kisses her before going with the police.

At the same hotel, she awakens to find a corpse stuck to the ceiling. When she wakes up in the morning, she calls Steven Crain, but he rejects her call. She calls Shirley Crain and she rejects her call, then leaves a voicemail, saying that she's worried about Luke Crain.

When she goes to buy a drink from the soda machine, the lights turn off and she is knocked back by the hanging corpse (The Bent-Neck Lady). When she returns to her room, she received a call from Steven Crain. She goes to the Hill House.

Inside, the house looks well-cared for. She is reunited with her family and husband. When her mother puts a locket on her neck, it's actually a noose and she pushes her off of the stairs.

Nellie realizes that she was the "Bent-Neck Lady" as she sees herself from her perspective.
