The Haunting of Bly Manor Wiki

Peter Quint is a major character in The Haunting Of Bly Manor, and the secondary antagonist. He is the manipulative business associate of Henry Wingrave. He eventually becomes involved with Rebecca Jessel, the Governess of Bly Manor, causing complications for the Wingrave family when the two become romantically involved.

Profile[]

History[]

Peter comes from an unstable home with an abusive father. His mother was in a mental institution but gets out and tries to blackmail him out of money. This is a major driving force behind his actions at Bly Manor.

Peter becomes the right hand man of Henry, and eventually takes up the majority of Henry's work, including the hiring of a new Governess for Bly Manor. Peter eventually becomes romantically involved with Rebecca — the new Governess — causing complications at Bly Manor. Eventually, while stealing from the Bly Manor properties, Peter encountered with the ghost of Viola Lloyd or "The Lady of The Lake" and killed on the grounds of Bly Manor, becoming a ghost. He possesses Rebecca and the two plan to run away together, but Peter drowns Rebecca whilst possessing her to force her to stay with him forever.

Possessing Miles[]

Peter eventually forms a bond with Miles Wingrave, and begins to possess him in order to navigate Bly Manor unannounced; nobody is aware of this, however, and everyone ties the behaviour down to Miles being badly behaved. After Dani finds out that Peter is still at the grounds of Bly Manor, and further that he is possessing Miles, she concocts a plan with Rebecca to free Miles. It is unknown what this plan consisted of, however, and nothing is seen of Peter after the ghosts at Bly Manor are released by Dani; it is assumed too that he is released from an eternity at Bly.

Personality[]

At first, Peter is shown to be attractive, charismatic and aloof, which is a facade for his more manipulative possessive side.

Relationships[]

Rebecca Jessel[]

Peter forms a close relationship with Rebecca upon first meeting and the two become romantically involved shortly after. Peter becomes psychologically and sometimes physically abusive to Rebecca. He is controlling and manipulative and he tries to force her to both stay with him forever and steal from the Wingraves to pay off his mother. When Rebecca refuses to steal from the Wingraves, but agrees to leave Bly with him, he possesses her and drowns her, forcing her to stay with him forever.

The two concoct plans to possess the Wingrave children and be together, but Rebecca is unwilling to possess Flora and has her pretend so that Peter doesn't find out. Unbeknownst to Peter, Rebecca teams up with Dani to free the two children from Peter's influence.

Mother[]

It can be inferred that Peter grew up in an abusive household which led him to having a estranged relationship with both his parents. Based on the memory that Peter is consistently tucked into of being blackmailed by his mother, it is insinuated that Peter's mother is either an addict coming out of rehab, a former patient at a mental institution, or coming out of prison. Peter's mother knew of his father's abuse and either didn't believe him calling him "silly" when he went to tell her about his father's treatment or she didn't care and said that Peter was "okay."

At some point, Peter's mother came to his apartment asking for money instead of asking Peter's father for help. When Peter refused, she blackmailed him by threatening to inform Wingrave about Peter's juvenile record.

Father[]

Peter was likely physically and sexually abused by his father. At the time, Peter was unaware that what was happening to him was abuse, saying "I didn't know any better." It is unclear whether or not Peter's father molested any of his friends who spent the night at a sleepover but Peter was still disgusted at the idea that his mother allowed anyone to come over when she knew what had been happening to him. Before the events of the series, Peter and his father had some sort of falling out where according to Peter's mother, "You know he'd kill you if he could. For what you did to him."

Quotes[]

Peter: “Fur like that, you have to feel it on your skin. At least once in your life.”

Peter: “Let me show you, just how beautiful you are.”

Peter: "You’re naïve when you want to be. That’s good to know.”

Peter: “It’s good to know when a man asks you to put something in your mouth, he doesn’t have to ask twice.”

Peter: “You just get your mum and your dad. A safe place with two people who will love you so much. That makes you the luckiest man in the world. The richest person. I wish… I wish I could be that rich.”

Trivia[]

  • He is responsible for Rebecca Jessel's death; drowning her whilst possessing her.
  • He is also behind the bad behaviour displayed by Miles.
  • When Peter first appears in the show, the song 'Tainted Love' is playing, foreshadowing his tumultuous relationship with Rebecca.
  • Peter can only hop or be 'tucked' into one memory. Whereas the other characters visit multiple memories both pleasant and unpleasant, Peter always revisits the time his mother came to blackmail him, calling it "hell"
