The Haunting of Hill House (Season 1)
Name or appearance Episodes Description
The Bent-Neck Lady The Bent-Neck Lady appears to Nell not long after the Crain-family moves into Hill House. She appears as a "floating" ghost with her neck bent to one side, because she died when she hung herself. In episode 5 it is revealed that the Bent-Neck Lady is the ghost of Eleanor Crain, after Olivia Crain convinces her to commit suicide.
Poppy Hill Poppy Hill was the clinically insane wife of William Hill and is often portrayed as the evil personification of Hill House. Her appearance changes between young and alive and a more rotten ghost. She turns Olivia Crain against her husband Hugh Crain, and drives her to insanity.
William Hill William Hill married Poppy Hill after meeting her in an asylum, and together they moved into Hill House. He died when he built a wall around himself in the basement, which he regretted. He tried to break open the wall, which can be heard as scratching to Hugh Crain when he is clearing the mold in the basement, leading to him discovering William's body.
Abigail Dudley Abigail seems like Luke Crain's imaginary friend at first, because nobody believes that there is actually a girl his age on the property of Hill House. Abigail turns out to be the daughter of Horace and Clara Dudley. She dies when Olivia poisons her and is stuck to the house as a ghost.
Hazel Hill Hazel Hill was very ill while living in Hill house. Her bed was directly above the kitchen, and she communicated with the staff by talking through a megaphone that connects the two rooms. Her main appearances are as a voice and a reflection to Luke, and to Olivia when Olivia tries to poison Luke, Nell and Abigail. She explains to Olivia that Poppy is lying to her.
Poppy's son (boy in the wheelchair) Poppy's son doesn't have a name but appears to Olivia as a boy in a wheelchair. Poppy tells a story about her son ending up in a wheelchair after his legs suddenly stop working. She also tells about him banging on the walls, which is a sign of haunting that the characters encounter throughout the season.
Clock-repairman The clock-repairman also isn't given a name. He appears to characters throughout the season as a passive ghost, and is used by Hugh Crain to explain to Steven Crain that he also saw a ghost, because the clock that is being repaired according to Steven's book had not been repaired in years.
