Hazel Hill is a character in The Haunting of Hill House and one of the matriarchs of Hill House. She is the mother of Jacqueline Hill and regularly haunts the property despite having been dead for numerous years.

Biography

Early History

Not much is known About Hazel Hill. Her father Jacob Hill had the house built, and her mother died on the property before it was finished. It is believed that after Hazel’s father died, she shot his dogs in the middle of the night soon after Jacob died. That is most likely why the Crain family hears several dogs barking and howling in the middle of the night. Most of the time, the dogs begin barking suddenly and then they abruptly stop, almost as if Hazel and the dogs “relive” the moment that Hazel puts them down in the middle of the night. Hazel Hill lived at Hill House with her daughter Jacqueline. Hazel also lived with her brother William, his wife Poppy, and their two children. Hazel reportedly did not get along with her sister-in-law Poppy while alive.

Hazel gifted a porcelain tea set to her daughter Jacqueline that included a tea cup with silver stars on it, referred to as a “cup of stars.”

At one point, Hazel was very ill while living in the home. Her bedroom was directly above the kitchen, in which an old fashioned speaking tube mouthpiece was installed in order for her to speak with staff below. Clara and Horace Dudley worked on the property, and bought the cottage off the grounds. Horace Dudley’s mother worked at Hill House in the kitchens, and his wife Clara Dudley cared for Hazel during her illness, sometimes working double and triple shifts.

Theo senses that Hazel’s bed was a “sick bed” while sitting on it, and Luke sees Hazel’s ghost in a reflection of the brass speaking tube.

On the last night that the Crain family is in Hill House, Olivia Crain encounters Hazel’s ghost. Hazel’s ghost tells Olivia not to trust the apparition of Poppy Hill that she is seeing, calling Poppy a liar.

• Young Luke and Theo saw Hazel's reflection in the brass speaking tube when they were children. Olivia sees her on the night of the big storm, and speaks with her during the last night the family is in the house.
